Skills You'll Build

Five skills you'll practice and be able to offer

The masterclass is built around applied practice, not passive watching. Each skill below maps directly to something you can put in a client proposal or a sample portfolio — immediately after completing that module.

Newsletter Strategy and Brief Planning

Before you write a single sentence, a good producer understands the audience, goal, and schedule. You will learn to capture all of that in a reusable brief that shortens revision cycles and keeps clients satisfied.

What you'll practice

  • Build a content brief from a client conversation
  • Map subscriber goals to newsletter section types
  • Create a realistic four-week production calendar
  • Define tone guidelines in a one-page reference document

Why it matters

Clients value producers who ask the right questions upfront. A clean brief is a professional signal that sets you apart from writers who just "start drafting."

AI-Assisted Writing and Layout

You will learn to use AI drafting tools to produce clear, scannable newsletter content quickly — then apply editorial judgment to ensure every issue sounds like the client's brand.

What you'll practice

  • Draft a subject line set (five variants) using AI assistance
  • Structure a complete newsletter issue with intro, body, and CTA sections
  • Adapt the same draft for two different tones: informational and promotional
  • Apply line-length and whitespace principles for email readability

Why it matters

AI does not replace editorial skill — it accelerates it. Knowing how to prompt, review, and refine AI output is what makes you the professional your client is paying for.

Responsible newsletter production means every issue goes only to subscribers who genuinely opted in. You will learn the checks that protect your client and their subscribers.

What you'll practice

  • Verify that a list is permission-based before accepting a production scope
  • Confirm "From" name, domain, and reply-to are consistent and trustworthy
  • Audit an unsubscribe link for visibility, function, and CAN-SPAM / CASL compliance
  • Recommend a basic list-hygiene step to a client after a high-bounce send

Why it matters

Skipping consent and hygiene checks is the fastest way to harm a client's sender reputation — and your own. This skill is non-negotiable for anyone offering email production seriously.

Pre-Send Testing and Quality Checklists

A polished issue that breaks on mobile or contains a broken link destroys trust immediately. You will build the habit of running a structured QA pass before every send.

What you'll practice

  • Work through a 12-point pre-send checklist on a sample newsletter
  • Check rendering on mobile, desktop, and two common email clients
  • Find and fix a hidden broken link in a test template
  • Write a brief QA sign-off note to document your process for the client

Why it matters

Clients will not tell you about broken links — they will simply stop hiring you. A documented QA process is a competitive differentiator and a reason clients trust you with monthly retainers.

Client Reporting and Recurring Scopes

One-off work rarely becomes stable income. You will learn to present your completed work professionally and propose the recurring scope structure that keeps clients engaged month after month.

What you'll practice

  • Write a post-send report covering open rate context, notable clicks, and next steps
  • Build a sample monthly retainer scope outlining deliverables and turnaround times
  • Draft a one-paragraph "what I do and what I need from you" onboarding summary
  • Identify two upgrade opportunities to pitch after a successful first issue

Why it matters

Recurring clients are how a newsletter production skill becomes a reliable extra income. This final module connects the craft to the business.
